Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is a treatment concept that involves stretching and contracting (activation) of the muscle group being targeted in order to achieve maximum static flexibility. Physiotherapists use it to improve muscle elasticity and it has been shown to have a positive effect on active and passive range of motion.
PNF is a painless method. By applying this technique, the therapist does not judge what the patient can't do, but focuses on what he can do and works to develop it, all with the goal of regaining function. The therapist works closely with the patient and this creates a feeling of security for the patient. The focus in PNF is individual work of the therapist with the patient.
